Chapter 4: The Brothers
The fraternity house sat at the end of Alder Street with a banner across the porch that said CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS.
It was graduation weekend, and the street was full of parents.
They were loading minivans and carrying framed diplomas and taking pictures of each other on the front steps.
Nell parked the car behind a station wagon and cut the engine.
"You don't have to do this today," she said.
"I do," I said. "They think I'm hiding."
I got out with the contact sheet in one hand and my phone in the other.
I walked to the middle of the sidewalk, right where the parents could see me, and stopped.
On the porch six boys were drinking beer out of red cups.
Two of them I knew by their faces from the lawn.
One of them saw me and said something to the others, and they all laughed.
"I'd like to talk to the house," I said.
Nobody on the porch moved.
"I'll do it loud if I have to."
Up the street a mother stopped with a box of dorm bedding in her arms.
I held up the first frame.
"Yesterday on our quad, two of you held me down on the grass while the rest watched. This one had my left wrist. This one had my shoulder. You're on the picture. There's a time on every one."
One of the brothers on the porch put his cup down.
"Margo, come on. Everybody was doing it."
"Everybody wasn't holding my arms."
I held up the second frame.
The mother with the bedding put her box on the hood of a car.
Another father had turned around on his front walk.
