Chapter 18: Sworn
The circuit courthouse on Calvert Street had marble stairs worn to a dip in the middle, and I climbed them on Monday morning with my pen in my coat pocket and my knees steady.
Marguerite Doyle met me at the top.
She wore the gray suit, and she held her briefcase in both hands.
"They have put you on the witness list," she said. "As a fact witness. Not an expert."
"Who did?"
"I did, Friday night. In front of the judge's clerk."
"You said you couldn't tell me anything," I said.
"I couldn't tell you what I knew," Marguerite said. "I could still put your name on a list."
She almost smiled.
"There is press," she said. "Four stations. Eleni telephoned them herself."
"Of course she did."
"Dr. Hennessy." Marguerite took off her glasses. "Whatever you say in there, say it plainly. Say only what you know. Do not guess for them."
"I know how to testify," I said.
"I know you do. I am saying it for myself."
She put her glasses back on and opened the courtroom door.
It was a big paneled room with a high bench and rows of oak pews, and every pew was full.
I saw the camera crews at the back, and the reporters with their notebooks, and a sketch artist with a pad.
I saw the church women in black.
I saw Eleni.
She sat in the first row behind the prosecution table in her black dress with the cross on her chest, with her hands folded.
She did not turn her head.
Two rows behind her, in a dark suit that hung off his shoulders, sat Niko.
