Chapter 20: Learn
They gave him a plea that Thursday, and a night at the cottage before they took him to serve it.
The judge had agreed to it in chambers.
The state dropped the murder count against Kostas altogether, and the racketeering count came down to the stevedoring books, and he would plead to those.
He would serve what the court called a short term, eleven months already counted and three more to come.
Niko had walked out of the courtroom on Monday between two detectives with his hands in front of him.
He had not been cuffed.
He had asked not to be.
He was in the county facility on his own plea, and Marguerite said the manslaughter count might hold, with a gun he had never meant to fire.
I did not know yet what I felt about that.
I knew I had stood up, and the thing had come right, in the way things come right when someone breaks them first.
The supervisor let Kostas have the night.
He sat in his car at the gate until nine and then drove away, and said over his shoulder, "Tomorrow at ten, Mr. Drakos. I will not be late."
"Thank you," Kostas said.
"Don't thank me. I'm doing it for my brother's ham."
I laughed, and the supervisor went red and got into the car.
By dark we were alone.
I had lit the fire in the little parlor, which neither of us had used.
It was a low room off the kitchen with a stone hearth, two threadbare armchairs and a rag rug, and a window on the water.
I sat on the floor in front of the fire in my socks and held my hands to the heat.
