Chapter 9: The Monitor
I woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of a man trying to be quiet in a kitchen.
The bedroom was small, with a pine ceiling and a quilt that smelled of cedar.
Gray light came through the window, and the river beyond it was the color of pewter.
I had no memory of coming to bed.
I had a memory of being carried, and of a long slow lowering onto the quilt, and of his mouth on my shoulder.
I lay still and checked myself the way I would check a patient.
I was not afraid.
I was not sorry.
I was angry that I was not sorry.
I pulled on his gray sweater and went down the hall barefoot.
He stood at the stove with his back to me, cracking eggs into a pan one-handed.
The scarred left hand held the pan's handle, and it did not shake.
The monitor was a black band against the bone of his ankle.
"Sit," he said, without turning.
"You can't tell me what to do," I said.
"No."
He turned, and set a plate on the table.
Eggs, toast, a slice of feta, a wedge of tomato.
He set a cup of coffee beside it.
"Please sit, Fay," he said.
I sat.
He took the chair across from me and did not eat.
His hands lay flat on the pine beside his own plate, and I noticed it and did not mention it.
"You said you would tell me in the morning," I said.
"It is morning."
"Then tell me why you asked for me."
He looked at me for a long moment.
His eyes were red at the rims, and there was a pulse beating in the hollow of his throat.
