Chapter 16: Rex Talks
Rex walked into the pool house as if it were his own living room, which it was.
He lowered himself onto the end of the daybed and crossed one ankle over the other.
"Please don't bother to dress, Ash," he said. "I've seen worse."
Ashton had zipped his jeans and stood in front of me with his jaw set.
I was fastening my scrub top the wrong way and didn't care.
In the pocket of my scrub pants, my phone lay warm against my thigh.
I had pressed record when Dottie turned onto the side street.
It was still running.
"You're trespassing," Ashton said.
"On my own property."
"You kidnapped me."
"I invited you to a quiet weekend," Rex said, "in a house with a pool."
He looked at me.
"Miss Larkin, you're clever, and I admire that in a tool.
"So let's skip the part where we pretend, and say what everyone in this room already knows."
"Please do," I said.
