Chapter 15: Terms

Emme's POV

Godfrey read the whole file standing up, and he took forty minutes to do it.

Dad sat in the leather chair by the window with his cap on his knee.

I stood by the desk and watched the carriage house through the glass.

The light in its window was on. Nobody came out of the door.

I noticed I was looking, and I made myself look at Godfrey instead.

He put down page eleven and took off his glasses.

His hands were not steady, so he laid them flat on the blotter.

"I thought she found out when I did," he said. "Two weeks ago. I thought we were in it together."

"She wasn't in it with you," I said. "She was ahead of you."

"Emme."

"Six years ahead."

He turned his face to Dad.

"Frank, I don't have the words for this."

"No," Dad said. "I don't think there are any."

Godfrey sat down heavily behind the desk.

"I asked you to stay a week," he said, to me. "I think I wanted to hear you laugh at my table once."

That one went in deeper than the file had.

I did not let my face change, but I took a long time to answer.

"What do you want to do?" I said.

"I'll speak to her tonight. Alone, quietly. She'll tell me why."

"I'd like to hear what she says to you."

"Then I'll deal with it after Saturday."

"What happens on Saturday?"

"The gala is two hundred people, Emme. The Foundation's donors. The clinic board. My bank." He pressed his thumbs to his eyes. "If this comes out in that room, I lose the Foundation, and the bank calls the loan on the mill. Forty families work for me."
