Chapter 14: The Suitcase

"Don't go down," Caelen said.

"I'm not going to."

His grandmother was already opening the front door.

We heard her through the floor.

"Look at you, you're drowned. Get in here."

Caelen closed his eyes.

"She doesn't know who that is," I said.

"She knows exactly who that is. She's watched the video half a dozen times."

We went down.

Kelsey sat at the kitchen table in a towel, with her wet coat steaming on the radiator.

His grandmother set a bowl of chowder in front of her.

Kelsey looked at it.

"I don't eat dairy."

"You do tonight," his grandmother said, and sat down across from her with her arms folded.

I stayed standing.

Caelen leaned in the doorway, the same way he had my first night.

"Why are you in Boston?" I asked.

Kelsey wiped her face with the towel and left a black smear on it.

"Spencer brought me. For his lawyers. I was supposed to give a deposition next week."

"Saying what?"

"That you signed the letter in September. At brunch. That I watched you do it."

His grandmother made a low noise.

"And?"

"And I said I wanted to be paid first." Kelsey's chin went up. "Brett won't answer my calls. His dad fired me on Monday. I don't have anything, Sadie. So I asked. And Spencer put my suitcase in the hallway of the Four Seasons and called security."

She laughed, a wet ugly sound.

"He said I was a liability. Me."

"You're the only one who can forge my name," I said.

She flinched.

Then she leaned across the table toward me, and her voice went soft and sweet.

The voice from the bathroom door sophomore year.

"So let's fix it. You and me." She held her hands out, palms up. "I'll say Spencer made me sign it. You say I didn't know what it was for. I never read the letter. That's true, I didn't. We both walk away and he goes down alone."
