Chapter 21: Visiting Room
I sat on the stoop, staring down at the letter in my hands.
Then I went upstairs and put it on Caelen's kitchen table.
He read it once.
"You don't have to answer it," he said.
"I know."
"You're going to answer it."
"I'm going to answer it to her face," I said. "Once. Then I never have to again."
He looked at me over his reading glasses.
"I'm coming."
"You're waiting in the car."
"I'm coming and waiting in the car."
The federal detention center in Los Angeles was a tall beige building downtown with windows.
Caelen sat in the rental in the parking garage with a crossword and a bag of gas station almonds.
"If anyone gets loud," he said.
"Nobody's going to get loud."
"You said that at Corwin Group."
"And nobody did. Brett just cried."
Inside, I gave up my phone, my keys and my belt.
A guard walked me down a hallway that smelled like floor wax and burnt coffee.
The visiting room had bolted-down tables and plastic chairs in three colors.
Kelsey was already sitting at one.
She wore a khaki jumpsuit two sizes too big.
Her platinum hair had grown out two inches of dark brown at the roots.
No lashes. No makeup. No phone.
She looked like the girl at orientation, before she learned where the cameras were.
Then she saw me, and her whole face lit up.
"Babe," she said. "You came."
I sat down across from her.
"I came to answer your letter."
"I knew you would. I told my lawyer. I said, Sadie always comes." She leaned forward with her hands clasped on the table. "Okay. So the judge is in May. You just have to write a letter, or say a few words. Say I was a good friend. Say Spencer used me. Which he did."
