Chapter 10: The Sea Gate
The security man was on the radio before I finished the sentence.
"All posts. Boats inbound on the south dock. Wake everyone. Now."
Dad grabbed my mother's arm.
"The safe room. Security man, take her."
"I'm not leaving her," my mother said, and she meant me.
"Mom, go," I said.
It was the first thing I'd called her in a year.
She stared at me.
Then she went, with the security man's hand on her back, running up the lawn toward the dark house.
Dad and I ran behind them.
Floodlights banged on across the grass, one after another.
Down on the south dock, the sea gate stood wide open.
Three black boats slid up against the pilings.
Men came over the sides in dark jackets and ski masks. Ten. Twelve.
Somebody in the house was shouting my brothers' names.
Declan came out the terrace doors barefoot in sweatpants with a fire poker in his hand.
Landon was right behind him with nothing at all.
