Chapter 12: Bruce's POV: The Back Pew
Bruce's POV
I had promised to wait in the lobby.
I did not last long.
The doctor came through the revolving door at eight forty with a clipboard, and I knew his face from a security file I'd had pulled on her father two days ago.
He rode up in the same elevator I took, a floor behind.
When I reached the fortieth floor, the boardroom doors stood open, and two guards were blocking the way.
I didn't push past them.
I stood where she could see me, and I let them look at the size of me.
It was enough.
Inside, Livia stood alone at the middle of the table with her father in front of her and a form in the doctor's hand.
She wasn't afraid.
I saw it in her shoulders before I saw it in her face.
"Doctor," she said, in her clear, tired, reasonable voice. "You can evaluate me right here."
"Livia, this isn't the place," her father said.
"You picked it."
She turned her phone around and set it upright on the table, with the camera facing the doctor.
"I'm recording. These seven directors are witnesses." She looked at the oldest man, and he nodded. "Go ahead. Ask me anything."
The doctor looked at her father.
Her father looked at the floor.
"Ask me the date," Livia said. "Ask me who the president is. Ask me what was in my mother's coffin."
"That's not a standard question," the doctor said.
"Sandbags," Livia said. "Six of them. Signed for by my brother. Was that on your clipboard?"
The doctor put the clipboard down.
