Chapter 20: Her One Veto

Livia's POV

The closing was set for eleven o'clock in a glass conference room on the forty-first floor.

I walked in at five to.

Dad sat at the middle of the long table with his lawyer on his right.

Across from them sat three men from the Genoa importer in expensive gray suits, and a young translator with a laptop.

At the end sat a small, pale man with a stamp and an ink pad, who would not meet my eyes.

The notary.

He had called Bruce at five that morning and said, in a whisper, that he had never stamped a page for a person who wasn't there and he wasn't going to start.

Bruce had told him to come anyway.

"Livia," Dad said, and his face went through three expressions. "This is a closed session."

"I hold fifteen percent."

"Your consent is on file."

"I know. I wanted to see the scan."

The lawyer slid a page down the table without a word.

It was the signature block.

Livia Benedetti, typed, and above it, in black ink, my name in a small neat hand.

I put my palm beside it.

"Notary," I said. "Is this the woman standing in front of you?"

The small pale man stood up.

His hands shook, and he held them flat against the table to stop them.

"Ma'am, I... I was told this page was signed by the shareholder in person, last Tuesday."

"Was I here last Tuesday?"

"No."

"Do you have my ID?"

"I have a copy. It was sent over with the page."

"Does the name on the page match the copy?"

He looked at his hands.

"The signature is the same on both," he said. "It's exactly the same. Down to the little tail on the L."

The translator stopped typing.

One of the three Genoa men leaned toward the other and said something low.

"A person doesn't sign her name the same way twice," I said. "The ink on this page is a printer's. I can show you what I signed five years ago, and every transfer since."
