Chapter 6: The Reception

I carried the certificate out to the lawn with its silver frame still on.

Claire ran after me and said, "Livia, give it back, you'll drop it."

I walked down the white-rose aisle and stopped under the quartet's canopy.

The quartet stood up.

I took the microphone off its stand, tapped it once and said, "Good afternoon."

Sixty guests turned.

Ethan was at the cake table with a glass in his hand.

When he saw what I was holding, he put the glass down very slowly.

"My name is Livia Benedetti," I said. "Until three days ago, I was engaged to the man standing by that cake."

Nobody breathed.

"He is the groom at this party, and the bride is my sister."

A woman at the nearest table said, "What?"

"Three days ago I was due to marry him. Now I'm holding the paper that says he never could." I held up the frame. "The date is on the certificate. He proposed to me in a restaurant five years ago, with her already wearing his ring."

Ethan took two steps forward.

"Livia, stop it. You're upset."

"I'm quoting the registry."

"These are my clients," he said under his breath.

"I know," I said. "That's why I'm talking."

I scanned the crowd.

Half of them wore small name badges from a Manhattan firm.

"Ethan introduced me to many of you," I said. "At the Christmas dinner. At the golf day. As his fiancée. I'd like to know how many of you gave him wedding gifts."

A man with silver hair near the bar put his drink down.

"I did," he said, and his voice was cold. "A dinner set. Ethan told us the wedding was held up by her family."
