Chapter 11: What She Said at the Shrine
"I said I wished this family had never known me," I told the elder.
Nobody in the kitchen moved.
"That's all?"
"That's all. I was crying, and Odette had just told me I'd never be heir, and I said it into the stone." My voice shook. "I didn't mean it, and I took it back in my head as soon as it left my mouth."
"The stone doesn't hear the head."
"It was one sentence."
"The ones that work usually are," the elder said.
The next night the Harlan shrine was ringed with torches.
Both packs had come, two hundred wolves in dark coats standing on the snow in the clearing, and a hush lay over them.
My father stood at the altar with my mother at his side.
Odette stood a step in front of them in a white gown, with moonstones in her hair, and she looked calm and lovely.
I came up the hill with Torin at my shoulder and the old hound at my heel.
Heads turned.
Someone whispered *the girl from the video*.
My mother's eyes found me and slid off.
I made myself keep walking until I stood before the Council elder at the foot of the altar.
"The hearing is open," she said. "Alpha Harlan, you wish to name your heir."
"I do," my father said. "My daughter Odette."
"On what ground?"
"She is my only child."
I closed my eyes.
"Alpha Harlan," the elder said. "Look at the girl beside Alpha Brask."
My father looked.
"Do you know her?"
"I saw her at my daughter's birthday. She made a scene."
