Chapter 18: Silver in the Stone
Saturday night the shrine was lit with more torches than I had ever seen there.
Both packs had come again, two hundred wolves in dark coats on the packed snow.
Torin walked on my left with his hand at my back, and Fenna walked on my right with her braid pinned up and a basket of bandages she said was for emergencies.
The old hound trotted ahead of us, tail high.
The Council elder wasn't there.
Her wardens stood at the foot of the altar, and the taller one met us at the edge of the ring.
"Her car stopped on the mountain road," he said. "She sends word the rite goes on without her. She will arrive when she can."
"That's convenient," Fenna muttered.
"It's a long road, healer," the warden said.
Torin's hand tightened on my spine.
I looked around.
My parents stood at the altar side by side.
My mother saw me and pressed her lips together, and my father gave me one small bow, as if I were a stranger of rank.
Odette waited in front of them in a plain white dress with her braid down her back and no jewelry.
She was barefoot in the snow.
She looked so small that something in me ached, and I hated that it did.
The warden lifted his hand, and the clearing quieted.
"This is the Blessing rite of Harlan Ridge," he said. "The Alpha will speak."
My father cleared his throat.
"My younger daughter has asked to say something," he said. "Odette."
Odette lifted her chin.
Her eyes were already wet, and they shone in the torchlight.
"I'm not going to ask to be named," she said. "I'm not fit for it."
