Chapter 10: Six Pounds Three Ounces
Eli came down the lawn when Brody's truck had gone.
He sat beside me on the dock and didn't say anything.
I put the bracelet in his palm.
He read it in the light from his phone. He read it again, slowly, with his lips moving.
"Six pounds, three ounces," he said.
"Yes."
"Mother, Nell Ann Ostrander."
"Yes."
He closed his hand over it and bent forward until his forehead was almost on his knees.
I put my hand flat on his back and felt him shaking.
"She was standing right in front of me at the park," he said into his lap. "She told me about the cartwheel. She told me her birthday. I looked straight at her finger."
"I know."
"I held her forehead, Nell. I held her face in my hand and said she was perfect."
"She is."
He lifted his head. His face was wet and he didn't wipe it.
"I want to go to your mother's house right now."
"We will," I said. "Not tonight. She'll hear you coming, and she'll have a lawyer on the porch before we reach the door."
"Then what do we do tonight?"
I looked at the lake.
"Take me somewhere with a door that locks."
His house was a small gray rental six blocks from the station, with a porch light and one plant that had died.
He turned the lock behind us and stood in the dark hall with his keys still in his hand.
"Nell, you don't have to."
"I know what I have to do." I took the keys out of his fingers and put them on the table. "I'm not asking for comfort. I want you."
