I crossed Route 20 without looking at the traffic.

Finnegan got out of the truck before I reached it.

"What did she say?" he asked.

"Callie called you on Tuesday."

His face did not change, and that told me everything.

"She left a number," I said. "She asked where I was. And you didn't tell me."

"Willa, listen."

"Same day. Those were your words. If you learn something about my mother, or Benton, or Callie, you tell me that day."

"She asked me for your location, and she was crying, and I couldn't tell if it was real." He kept his voice level. "Benton had just filed a petition with my name in it. I thought it could be a trap, so I held it until I could check."

"Until you decided I could stand it."

"That isn't what happened."

"It's exactly what I said I didn't want. You made the decision, and I was told after."

"I was protecting you."

"That's what every person in my family says."

He took the hit without moving.

I felt it land, and I did not feel better.

"Callie was telling the truth," I said. "You could have found that out by asking me."

"You were burning with fever on Thursday. You'd just heard about the tapes. I wasn't going to hand you one more reason to bolt."

"That was my reason to have."

His jaw worked.

"I won't say I wouldn't do it again."

"That's honest, at least." I stepped back. "Then I'll tell you where I stand. You said you'd take me where I say and ask nothing. I say not with you."
