Chapter 21: Before the Party
On Monday, I kept my promise.
I sat beside my father's chair in the infusion room on the ninth floor while the chemo dripped into his arm.
Penhurst Holdings was down again. A rival developer had picked up the Harbor Tower lot for half what my father paid.
"Idiots," he said. "That lot floods."
"Should I call them and tell them?"
"Don't you dare."
It was the first time he'd laughed since the wedding. It turned into a cough, but he kept smiling through it.
He didn't ask me to come home. Not once.
When the bag was empty, he looked at the ceiling.
"Your mother's going to that party on Saturday."
"I know."
"She says it'll look good for the stock. A happy family." He turned his head. "Is it going to look good, Noelle?"
He looked at me a long time.
"Tell your mother to wear comfortable shoes," he said.
On Tuesday, I called the number on the back of the police report.
"Saturday," I told the woman. "Eight o'clock. Can you be in Oceana?"
"I'll take the Thursday bus," she said.
