Chapter 18: She's Human

The post went up on the campus feed at six in the morning.

Camryn's face filled the screen, white-coated and teary.

"I'm sorry to tell you all this," she said. "Seren Fenner is human."

She sniffed, and wiped one eye.

"She lied to the pack about her bond to save herself. Look at her wrist."

By seven, three thousand wolves had watched it.

Evander drove me to campus while Gavin searched the roads to the lodge.

"She'll take the ledger to her father's friends," he said. "The post means she's on campus. We catch her before she leaves."

"And if the wolves catch me first?"

"Then you stay behind me."

"I'm tired of staying behind people."

He glanced at me, and his mouth curved.

"Then stand next to me."

The quad was full when we crossed into it.

Every wolf on campus stood on the grass, shoulder to shoulder.

The noise of them died as we walked in.

Somebody threw a coffee cup.

It burst on the path at my feet.

"Human!" a boy shouted.

"Liar!"

"Get her!"

Fifty wolves surged forward at once.

Evander's two friends stepped out of the crowd on either side of us.

Then more came, vampires from the dorms and the library steps, a dozen and then twenty.

They formed a line across the path.

The wolves stopped.

Nobody had ever seen the vampires stand together for a wolf.

"She's a human!" a girl screamed. "She's been lying to us!"

"She's been lying to herself," one of the vampires said calmly. "She only found out what she was a few weeks ago."

"That's not an excuse!"
