Chapter 16: The Writ of Binding
The Council served the writ at noon, in the Moon Hall, in front of everyone who could fit.
Nine grey cords sat at the horseshoe.
Three councillors had stayed home, and I thought I knew which three.
The chair held a sheet of Registry vellum in both hands.
"By the authority of the Ward Council," she read, "in the absence of a fit sovereign, Idony Wrexham is declared the keystone queen of Orrenmoor."
"She will be bound to the throne at the new moon, and her gift will hold the wards for the life of the kingdom."
A clerk stood ready beside her with a silver stamp and a pot of ink.
"Her consent," the chair said, "is recorded by this writ."
I laughed out loud.
It echoed under the dome and every head in the gallery turned.
"My consent," I said, "is recorded by a woman I've never spoken to."
"The law does not require speech."
"The law requires a yes. I'm the only one in this room who has one to give, and you haven't asked."
