Chapter 20: The Bite

"Why first?" I said.

Cassian didn't look away from my neck.

"Because I want to feel you choose me before I put a single tooth on you," he said. "I'd like you to be the one who takes."

"And you?"

"I'd take it from your hand, if it's offered."

I pushed up on my elbows.

"Not here," I said. "In the Moon Hall."

His eyebrow went up, the one with the scar.

"The Council will have men in it."

"The Council has twelve chairs and a lot of soup." I climbed out of bed. "The Moon Hall is where somebody read out a lie and called it the Moon. I'd like to say a true thing in the same room."

He stood.

He took the coat off the chair and put it round my shoulders, and neither of us said anything else for the length of two staircases.

The hall at night is a different place.

The benches were empty and the dome stood black over the floor, and in the middle of the dais the crystal ledger lamp sat dark on its stand.

Hester had put herself at the great doors with her arms folded and a candle.

"If anyone comes," she said, "they'll find a physician and a very bad temper."

"Hester."

"I said nothing." She looked at the ceiling. "Be quick. And be ridiculous. I'm told it helps."

The doors boomed shut behind us.

I walked to the middle of the floor and let Cassian's coat fall.

I had worn nothing under it but my own skin.

He stopped three paces off.
