Chapter 12: The Cabinet
Seb's POV
The cabinet was gray steel, four drawers tall, in the back of Andrei's office behind a coat rack and a framed law degree.
I had walked past it a thousand times.
I had never once wondered why a man would keep a child's drawings in a locked cabinet in an office where nobody was supposed to ask.
Dolly stood beside me in the dim light, with her arms folded.
"Open it," she said.
"It's his."
"It's your daughter's.
"Open it."
I slid Andrei's key into the lock.
It turned smoothly.
I pulled out the first drawer.
It was full of paper.
Manila folders, thick, each one labeled in Andrei's neat hand with a month and a year.
February.
March.
I lifted out the first folder and opened it, and a drawing slid onto the desk.
A car.
A band of blue water.
A long dark truck on a gray line above it, with its lights blacked out.
I picked up the next.
