Chapter 14: No
Blake Broussard came into the kitchen in his quilted vest, holding the casserole out in front of him.
He set it on the stove.
He did not look at the boxes along the wall.
He looked at his brother's swollen face, and his own eyes went soft and wet.
"Oh, little brother," he said.
"Oh, Seb.
"It's the week.
"I knew it would be the week."
Seb stood up.
He took the phone off the table, slid it into his back pocket and put his hand on the back of his chair.
"I didn't sleep," he said.
"Nobody sleeps in February," Blake said.
"Come here."
He opened his arms.
For one long moment I thought Seb would walk into them out of four years' habit.
His whole body leaned.
Then he put out one hand, flat, and Blake's arms stopped in the air.
"Not this morning," Seb said.
Blake lowered his arms slowly.
His smile stayed on his face, but it went thin.
"You're upset."
"I'm tired."
"Andrei said you took yesterday off," Blake said.
"He was worried about you."
"Did he say so?" Seb asked.
"He called me at dawn.
"He said somebody had been in his office."
Nobody in the kitchen moved.
I stood with my back against the counter and held on to the edge of the sink.
"Did he say who?" I asked.
Blake turned his warm eyes on me.
"Cher, no.
"He wouldn't accuse anybody.
"He only said a cabinet he keeps for the child had been opened, and he was afraid somebody had taken Margot's papers by mistake."
