Chapter 16: The Wall
Mateo drove me back to town and parked at the end of the alley, behind the Ostatua, with his lights off.
"I'll be right here," he said. "I'll hear every word."
He had called my phone from his, and I had put mine in the pocket of my coat with the line open.
His voice came out of the cloth, very small.
"If you want out, say my name. Any time. I'll be at the court in ten seconds."
"You can't run that fast."
He grinned at me.
"Watch me."
I laughed, once, in the dark.
He pulled me across the seat and kissed me hard.
It was a short kiss with his hand fisted in my coat, and I carried the taste of it down the alley.
The court was lit by a single bulb over the kitchen door.
Gorka stood at the foot of the high green wall with his hands in his jacket pockets and his head down.
He looked old.
In the yellow light the grey in his beard stood out, and so did the lines at his eyes.
"Mija," he said. "Thank you for coming."
"Aita Gorka."
"I owe you an apology. I came to Dr. Salaverria's clinic and I was hard on him. I was afraid for you."
I kept my hands in my pockets.
"Afraid of what?"
