Chapter 18: Aitor
At three in the morning I was alone in the dining room with the books.
The chairs were up on the tables, and the floor was still wet from the mop.
A single lamp burned over the register where my mother had stood.
I had been checking the lease accounts line by line, to see what Aitor had done to them.
He had done nothing.
Every figure was right, to the cent.
That was almost the worst of it.
Someone tapped on the front glass.
I looked up, and there he was on the step in his grey shirt and a dark coat, with his hands empty at his sides.
I took the pantry key from my pocket and held it in my fist.
Then I went and opened the door.
"I'm not coming in," Aitor said. "I only want to say something. You can say no."
"You can come in," I said. "You'll sit where I tell you."
I pointed him to the table nearest the register.
He pulled down a chair, and I sat opposite, with the lamp between us and the key on the cloth under my hand.
He looked tired.
He looked, for the first time, his age.
"Say it," I said.
"I have no speech."
"You had one at supper."
"That was for the room." He turned his hands over. "I came to answer questions. You must have some."
I did.
I had a hundred.
I asked the one I could bear.
"Did you know it was Gorka?"
"Not at first." His voice was flat. "I knew the case was wrong. My sister was a careful woman, and the man they had in the cell had a record but no reason to be on Grove Street. I read the file, and I read the statement. Your statement. It was written by a man who was not you."
