Mateo's POV
The first snow came down on the foothills in the first week of December.
I drove through it to a lawyer's office I had not told Rali I was visiting.
It was a narrow room above a laundromat on Overland Road.
The woman behind the desk was fifty and tired, in a cardigan.
She had spent five years trying to reopen a case that nobody would open.
She read the body shop invoice.
She listened to the recording I'd made of Gorka at the pelota wall and the one from my clinic lot.
Then she took off her glasses.
"Where did you get this?"
"The invoice is from the dead woman's brother," I said. "The recordings are mine."
"The girl who signed the statement was standing there when he said it."
She stared at me.
"She's willing to retract?"
"She's going to do it at the Sheepherders' Ball, in front of four hundred people, and she'll name him."
The lawyer tilted her head.
"That's not a procedure."
"No. It's a hall."
She almost smiled.
"A recantation in public is what a prosecutor can't ignore," she said. "It can be sworn to afterward, and no one can say she was coached in a room." She tapped the invoice. "The chief of police has a very tight spine when it comes to reputation. If this goes to his desk before the Ball, Gorka Beitia has a night to burn it. If it goes in the hall, with his own people on the door, he doesn't."
