Chapter 10: My Father's Yard
The old feed-store office sat at the back of the Iriondo yard behind the loading dock, a plank room with a tin roof and a window that had not been washed since my mother died.
I had worked in it for four years.
I had not been inside it for nine days.
Ximun's driver parked the truck at the gate and stayed in it with the engine running.
Ximun himself did not come.
I had asked him not to.
"I'm going to open the door of my own yard," I had said on the stair that morning, in the plain gray light.
"If you're standing behind me, they'll see the King.
"I want them to see me."
He had looked at me a long time.
"The door is open," he said finally.
"You said so.
"Go."
So I walked across the gravel in my green wool dress with my braid pinned up and the little green ledger under my arm.
It was ten in the morning.
The loading dock was running.
Two of the drivers were backing a flatbed up to the hay barn, and a boy in a hard hat was stacking feed sacks on a pallet.
