Amaia's POV
The Etxeberria Sheep Dog Trials and Lamb Dinner is held on the first Saturday in June.
It has been held since before anyone's grandfather came off the boat.
Every outfit in three counties brings its dogs, and every family brings a dish.
The priest blesses the long tables under the cottonwoods before anyone is let near the lamb.
Ximun's father never missed one.
Ximun told me all this at five in the morning in the kitchen at Owyhee, with his hands around a mug.
I had come back to the stone house the day after he knelt in the office.
I had not come back to his bed.
"I came for the books," I had told Garazi at the door.
"Of course, Iriondo," she had said, and put out two plates.
I had my old room with the bolt on my side.
I used it that first night, and lay on the white iron bed, and listened to him not walk past.
"It's nine days," Garazi said now, buttering bread.
"The invitations went out a month ago.
"Three hundred people.
"You won't be able to hide one of them from what you mean to do."
"I don't want to hide them," I said.
"I want every one of them in a chair."
Ximun looked up from his mug.
