Chapter 19: The Lamb Dinner

The long tables ran the length of the cottonwood grove, forty yards of white cloth under a high June sky.

I counted three hundred chairs.

By noon every one was filled.

The dogs worked the trial field behind the fronton court, black and white shapes streaming over the green, and the whistles rose and fell like a flock of birds.

The air smelled of woodsmoke and roast lamb and cut grass.

Ximun's cousins carried platters.

The priest blessed the tables in Basque and Latin and a little English, and three hundred people said amen.

I wore the green dress.

I had pinned my braid up and put the small green ledger under my arm, and under the white cloth at the head of the table, where nobody would look, lay the second ledger from the drawer.

Ximun stood behind my chair.

He had not touched me since the bank.

He wore a clean gray shirt and no hat, and he stood very straight, with his hands clasped behind his back like a man at a parade.
