Chapter 8: The Pantry
Amaia's POV
The Etxeberria table seated forty.
I counted the chairs from the kitchen door at four in the afternoon, while Garazi bullied two cousins into carrying them in.
I counted the people again at six, when the cousins came up from the road in good shirts with their wives.
Four outfit heads sat among them, men with leathered faces and wives in church dresses.
Every one of them looked at my left hand when I came in.
The iron ring was on it.
Ximun had slid it on that morning, in the kitchen, in front of his mother, without a word.
I had let him.
I sat at his right.
He did not touch me.
His knee was an inch from mine under the table, and I could feel the heat of it through my skirt.
My whole body had learned in three days what an inch was.
"Eat," Garazi said, to me and to no one else.
I ate.
At seven the door opened, and my father came in with a bottle of Rioja under his arm and his hat in his hand.
