Chapter 17: Knock

"Knock," I said.

He stood in the hallway outside my one room over the bakery, with snow melting off his shoulders, and I held the door open six inches.

I had played him the recording.

He had listened with his hands hanging between his knees, to every minute of my father's voice.

When it said I did not, I did not say that, he had closed his eyes.

Then I had put him out on the landing and shut the door.

I had stood with my back against it for a long time.

Now I had opened it.

"Knock," I said again.

"You told me you would not come through my door."

He looked at me.

He lifted his hand and rapped twice on the frame with one knuckle.

It was a small sound.

It went through me like a struck bell.

"Again," I said.

He knocked again.

"Say what you want."

"To come in," he said.

"Why?" I said.

"Because you are in there," he said.

"That is not a reason."

"It is the only one I have," he said.

"Don't tell me I've forgiven you," I said.

"I do not think you have," he said.

"Don't tell me I'm letting you off."

"I would not."

"You sat across a wedding table from me and let me think I was a debt," I said.

My voice was shaking at last, and it was a relief.

"For nineteen days you never said one kind word to me, until I made you.
