Xander's POV
The letter was in my coat, and the coat was on a hook in the study, and I had been standing in front of it for an hour.
It was four in the morning.
I had left her asleep with her hair across my pillow and one hand open on the quilt where my chest had been.
I had stood in her doorway for a long time.
I had not woken her.
The study had been my grandfather's, and it smelled of cold pipe and old paper.
I turned on the lamp and took the letter out of the pocket.
The envelope was plain and gray.
My name was on it, XAVIER, in the square capitals of a man who had learned to write in two languages.
Baba had put it in my hand on the wedding morning, in the vestry, with the choir tuning.
"Tomasz left this for you," she had said.
"For when the Petrovic girl is married.
"He made me swear."
I had read it standing in my wedding suit while Ilija held the ring.
I read it again now.
I did not need to, because I knew every word.
It named the man Tomasz had walked down to the slip to speak of.
