Chapter 8: Touch Me
He was lying on his side on the floor of the hallway, in a white undershirt and black trousers.
His arm was still stretched along the boards where my hand had left it.
He looked up at me.
I knelt in the doorway with the key in my fist.
"Say it," Luca said, very quietly.
"You have to say it, Graciela.
"I won't take it any other way."
"Touch me," I said.
My voice shook, and I made it stop.
"Touch me now.
"I'm telling you to."
He was up before I finished.
He came up off the floor in one move and went down on his knees in front of me.
For once his face was level with mine.
He did not grab.
He put one hand at the side of my neck, under my hair, and stroked his thumb along my jaw.
"Again," he said.
"Touch me, Luca," I said.
His mouth came down on mine.
It was nothing like the pier.
It was slow and deep and hot, and he tasted of coffee and of something darker underneath.
He kissed me as if he had all night and meant to use it.
I gripped his undershirt in both fists and kissed him back, and I felt him shudder under my hands.
He lifted me.
He stood and took me with him in one smooth lift, my legs around his waist.
My back met the frame of my own door, and then he carried me across my room to the bed.
He laid me down.
He stood over me, breathing hard, with his hands open at his sides.
"The dress," he said.
"Do you want it off?"
"Yes," I said.
"Say it," he said.
"Take it off me," I said.
"All of it."
He knelt on the mattress and found the zipper at my back.
The sound of it going down was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
He peeled the navy dress off my shoulders and down my arms.
He kissed the skin he uncovered, the point of my shoulder, the hollow of my collarbone.
His beard scratched.
I arched under it.
He drew the dress off over my hips and tossed it, and looked.
I wore white cotton, plain and a little worn.
