Chapter 10: The Statement

Beau told me in the garden, under the fig tree, with the luncheon still going on behind the glass.

I would not go anywhere private with him, so we stood in the open, thirty feet from twenty people pretending not to watch.

"Say it," I said.

He took one breath.

"I was nineteen. I was an intern for the summer in my father's office, and I was the one who carried the fund's quarterly statement to the accountant."

"Go on," I said.

"My father put a paper on the desk and said it was the statement. He said it had to go to the auditors with my signature as the intern who had delivered it. I signed it. It said the fund's money was in the account on the day I delivered it."

He stopped.

The next part cost him a lot, and I watched it cost him.

"It wasn't in the account," said Beau. "He put his hand over mine on the pen and told me to sign it, and I did."

"That statement was an exhibit in my father's trial."

"Yes."

"Your signature said the money was there," I said. "Which meant my father, who ran the account, had taken it afterward."

"Yes."

"They read it to a jury." My voice had gone strange. "They read it out, and you were in a courtroom, weren't you? Weren't you?"

"I was in the back row."

I had been in the third row, with Opal's hand over mine.

I tried to remember a tall boy of nineteen in the back, and I could not.

"You sat there," I said. "You listened to them take him."

"I did."

"Did you look at him? Once? Did one Ravenel look at my father in eleven years?"
