Chapter 18: The Bond
Sabra's POV
They let Beau out at nine o'clock the next morning, and I was on the courthouse steps when he came through the doors.
I had not been alone for one minute since the deputy left.
Clarice had made the calls, and she had made them at six a.m. in her bathrobe, and by eight there were two lawyers in the Ravenel hall with coffee, arguing over a file.
The bond was posted by ten past nine.
The money had come out of an account in Clarice's name, which she had not touched since 1991.
She wrote the check herself, sitting upright in the clerk's office on a hard chair, and signed it with a fountain pen.
"There," she told the clerk. "Now I've bought my grandson a morning."
But it was not Clarice who made me stop on the top step.
It was the crowd.
Sixty people stood on the courthouse lawn below, in a slow line that began at the doors and wound down to the sidewalk.
They were old.
Most of them leaned on canes or on one another, and the men had put on their church jackets.
