Chapter 21: The Plan
Clarice believed in planning a war at the kitchen table, over biscuits, with the cook sent out for the afternoon.
"Sit," she said. "All of you. Beauregard, you've got flour on your collar."
"It's not flour, Grandmother. It's coffee."
"Then it's coffee on your collar. Sit."

Beau had a legal pad and the face of a man who had not slept in two weeks.
His lawyers had told him not to leave the county.
He had taken that as advice to stay in the kitchen.
"The Lenders' Ball is the last Saturday in February," said Clarice, stirring her tea. "Three hundred people. Every bank that holds paper on the Terminals, the port authority, the governor's man, the board. And a hundred of the old union families Winston likes to invite, so he can be photographed shaking their hands."
