My Father Went to Prison for Their Money, So I Married Their Heir novel · Chapter 23 of 32
Chapter 23: Day 280
On the two hundred and eightieth day of my marriage, I went to the fourth floor of the terminal alone.
I asked to see my father-in-law.
The secretary looked at me and picked up her phone.
"He's in a meeting."
"I'll wait."
I sat on the leather bench outside the office in my plainest grey dress.
My hands were folded on my purse and my hair was pulled back.
I let my face go slack.
I had practiced it in the mirror for a week.
Beau had stood behind me in the glass with his arms crossed and said it was too good and made him nervous.
Eighty-five days remained.
We had written the number on a card and propped it behind the sugar bowl.
Only Clarice and Opal would see it there.
Since the afternoon at Reidsville, we had changed the goal in every line.
No more trumpet.
The Lenders' Ball had come and gone in February with Winston giving his speech about honesty.
Beau and I sat at the family table with our hands folded and said nothing, while Clarice kicked my ankle under the cloth.
