Chapter 24: The Filing

Beau's POV

The papers came on a Tuesday, in a thick envelope, hand-delivered by a process server in a short-sleeved shirt who would not look at me.

I read them standing in the driveway with the sun on my neck.

Winston had filed in the Superior Court of Chatham County for an annulment of my marriage on grounds of fraud.

It was nineteen pages.

On page four he quoted a paragraph that began, The parties agree that the term of this arrangement shall be twelve months, and I stopped reading.

He had the contract.

It was the one I wrote on the boathouse table, with Sabra's five terms in her handwriting, and our two signatures.

I had put it in the safe in the boathouse myself, behind the charts.

Somebody had opened the safe.

I thought of every person who knew the combination, and there was only one, and he had been born in the house.

I found Sabra in the sunroom with a cup of tea going cold at her elbow, reading Opal's cooking notes for the Sunday dinner.
