Chapter 11: Braided Rug
The woodstove roared in the front room.
Milan had pulled the braided rug into the middle of the floor and spread a quilt across it.
I stood at the edge of it in a flannel shirt and nothing else.
It was nine o'clock at night, and the curtains were drawn, and Gus had gone upstairs on his own with a grunt.
"What are you going to do to me?" I said.
Milan sat on the arm of the recliner with his sleeves rolled and a mug of coffee going cold at his elbow.
He put the mug down.
"You really want to know," he said.
"I want to hear it," I said. "All of it, in order. Tell me what you're going to do."
"It'll take a while."
"I've got till midnight."
He looked at me, and the whole room changed.
His voice, when it came, was lower than I'd ever heard it, steady and plain.
"First," Milan said, "you're going to stand right there, and I'm going to get up and walk around you once."
He stood.
He walked behind me, slowly, and I felt him stop at my back.
"Then I'm going to unbutton that shirt from the bottom up," he said. "One button at a time."
His breath was warm on my skin.
"I'm going to put my mouth on the back of your neck while I do it. You're going to keep your hands at your sides."
I nodded.
"When it's open, I'm sliding it off your shoulders and letting it fall," he said.
"Then I'm looking at you in the firelight for as long as I want."
I closed my eyes.
"Then I'm turning you by the waist, and I'm kissing you. Slow. Longer than you think you can stand."
His hand brushed my hair.
"I'll hold your face and go in with my tongue, and I'll take my time."
My knees were shaking.
"Then I'll lay you on the quilt on your back," he said. "I'll kneel between your legs."
I heard him smile.
"And I won't touch the place you want me to touch."
"Milan," I whispered.
