Chapter 12: Your Father Asked

The afternoon sun came through the kitchen window and lay across my father's oak table in a long yellow bar.

I had turned on every light in the room, as Milan had said to, and the overhead bulb buzzed.

He sat across from me with his hat on the table and his hands flat on the wood.

I sat in my own chair, and I did not look at the empty one by the window.

"You said tomorrow, in daylight," I said. "It's tomorrow."

"It is."

"Then I'll go first."

I'd had all night to practice.

I put my hands in my lap so he couldn't see them shake.

"Don't stay because Dad asked you to," I said.

Milan did not move.

"I read the note in your coat on Sunday," I said. "I wasn't looking for it. I wanted your lighter."

"Carly."

"It said, look in on her. It's his handwriting."

My voice cracked, and I pushed through it.

"Rick told me too. You've been looking in on me for two weeks, and you've been kind."

I took a breath.

"I'm grateful, and I'll let you off," I said. "You've done what he asked, and you don't owe him one more thing."
