Chapter 18: Split Wood
Milan kept his word about the kitchen.
At sunrise he drove home to feed Gus.
At ten o'clock I stood in his yard in my father's old work gloves and a pair of borrowed boots.
It was the last full day of my leave, and a cold bright Saturday.
The maples along Slate Run Road had gone the color of rust.
A woodpile ran along the back of the barn, higher than my head.
A stump the size of a table sat in the grass with an axe standing in it.
"Kindling," Milan said. "You'll want it for the apartment."
"I have a radiator."
"You'll want it anyway."
He pulled the axe out of the stump with one hand.
He set a split log on end, handed me the axe handle first, and stepped back.
"Show me what you've got."
I swung.
The blade glanced off the side of the log and thunked into the dirt, and the handle jarred my wrists.
Milan didn't laugh.
He looked at the sky.
"Go on," I said. "Say it."
"I didn't say a thing."
"Your shoulders are saying it."
"They've been up since five," he said. "Come here. Feet apart."
He stepped in behind me and set his boots on either side of mine, and put his hands on my hips.
