Chapter 15: The Photo

Boone was off me and across the room before I could sit up.

Kaylee didn't run.

She backed up to the top of the stairs with her phone held high over her head.

"Don't touch me, baby," she said. "It's already in my cloud."

Boone stopped.

He was naked in the hall, and she looked him up and down and laughed.

"Well," she said. "Now I know why you never wanted to finish with me."

I pulled my quilt off the bed and wrapped it around me.

"Get out of my mother's house," I said.

"It's not your mother's house," Kaylee said. "It's a holding company's house. I keep up."

She turned the phone around so we could see the screen.

The picture was dark and grainy, but there was nothing wrong with it.

Boone's bare back over me, my face on my pillow, my hand in his hair.

You could see my face.

"Downstairs," Boone said. "Both of you. I'm putting my pants on."

We stood in my mother's kitchen at one in the morning with the overhead light buzzing.

She was still wearing my mother's pearls.

"Half," she said.

"Half of what?" I said.
