Chapter 20: Boone's Last Night
Boone's POV
I watched Dot carry two cups of coffee into the foaling barn, and I knew what she was going to do.
I was standing at the back of my truck with a saddle in my arms.
I could have gone after her.
I put the saddle in the bed of the truck instead, and I walked up the hill.
The Ashcrafts have buried their own on that hill for four generations.
There's an iron fence around it and a cedar tree, and you can see every barn on the place from there.
Mary Ellen's stone was the newest one.
It had been more than a year, and the grass over her still hadn't grown in right.
I took my hat off.
"She's telling her," I said. "Dot. Right now."
The wind moved the cedar.
"I didn't break it," I said. "I want you to know that. I kept it a whole year."
I'd told Hayes in his kitchen that neither one of us got to be proud.
I wasn't proud of much, but I was proud of that.
