Lainey's POV

I stood in front of him on my mother's grave hill with the cedar dripping on both of us.

He'd asked.

He'd said he wouldn't, and he'd asked anyway, with his hat in his hand.

"No," I said.

He didn't flinch.

I think he'd known it before I came up the hill.

"This is my farm," I said. "This is her whole life. I can see every barn she ever built from right here."

"I know."

"And I'm not going to leave it so you can stop missing her somewhere warm."

He looked down at the stone.

"And there's one more thing," I said. "You ought to hear it from me."

"I already know that too," Boone said.

"Say it anyway."

"You're in love with him."

"I'm in love with Hayes," I said. "I have been since the trailer, and I was too mad to know it."

Boone nodded slowly.

Then he reached into his jacket and took out a small box.

He opened it and held it out to me.

My mother's pearls lay on the velvet, with the gold horseshoe clasp worn smooth on one side.
