Chapter 24: Ashcraft Farm
Hayes stopped at the spring house door and handed me the lantern.
Then he picked me up, dress and all, and carried me over the stone sill.
"You'll throw your back out," I said.
"Then you can tube me with mineral oil," he said. "I hear you're good at it."
He set me down inside.
I stood there in my mother's wedding dress and couldn't say anything.
There were lanterns on every ledge, a dozen of them, and their light moved on the old grey stone.
A little black iron stove sat in the corner with its pipe run out through the window, and it was throwing heat.
On the dry side of the floor, away from the water, he'd laid down a feather mattress and piled it with quilts.
The spring ran through its channel in the middle of the room, clear and loud.
"When did you do all this?" I said.
"This afternoon," he said. "Dot helped. She called me a damn fool the whole time."
"She calls everybody that."
"She said it with feeling," he said.
He came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders.
He kissed the side of my neck, just above the pearls, and stayed there, breathing against my skin.
I closed my eyes.
That was the first thing he did to me as my husband, and it was the softest.
"There are about forty buttons on the back of this dress," he said.
"Forty-two."
"You counted?"
"Dot counted," I said. "She did them up."
He started at the top.
He undid them one at a time, slowly, and he kissed every inch of my back as it came bare.
By the twentieth button I was shaking.
By the fortieth I was leaning back against him with my breath going short.
The silk slid off my shoulders.
He caught it before it hit the floor.
He lifted my mother's dress away from me and carried it across the room.
