Chapter 24: The Door Stays Open
I baked my own wedding cake, four tiers of lemon and almond, and I wrote nothing on it at all.
The Rusconi Social Club had never been so full of light.
Every bulb in the hall was lit, and the card tables were pushed together under white cloths, and the front doors stood wide open to the street.
The widow of the dead capo ran the kitchen.
Gino's wife sat at the head table in a blue dress, with a place card in front of her chair that said *Family*.
I had written it myself.
My hand did not shake.
Teo stood at the altar in the church that morning in the same dark suit he had worn to every funeral, and when I came up the aisle his face did something I will never forget.
He didn't blink.
He didn't look at anyone else.
At the reception he found me by the cake, straightened my veil with one finger, and said, "I can't believe you're mine."
"Say it louder. I'm the boss now."
"You are not the boss. You're the boss's daughter."
"Same thing."
He kissed me in front of everyone, and the capos banged their glasses on the tables.
Around four o'clock the front door darkened.
A man in a gray suit stood on the threshold with a woman beside him.
He was thirty-one, with a dentist's tidy haircut.
He took one step into the light.
"Allegra."
I put down my fork.
"I told my wife everything," he said. "On the drive. She wanted to come."
"I'm glad."
"I burned the card." He swallowed. "Finally. In the backyard. It went up in seconds."
I took his hands.
They were cold, and I held them until they weren't.
He wasn't the only one.
The fourth man came from Phoenix with his father's widow on his arm, and wept at the door.
The third, who had been a bartender in Providence, brought a bottle of anisette.
