Chapter 8: The March Paper

"She knows I'm here," Rafe said, and set the phone back on the nightstand.

"How?"

"Your brother must have told her where I slept."

"Why would she write 'don't tell her'?"

"Because she's afraid of you," he said. "Not of me."

I turned that over in the dark.

Then I fell asleep with my head on his arm, which I had not planned either.

The diner on Fifth had one cracked red booth in the back.

Ross was in it at five to nine, with a coffee he hadn't touched, in a shirt he'd clearly slept in.

I slid into the seat across from him.

"You came alone," he said.

"So did you."

"Dustin thinks I'm at the gym."

"Ross, what is it?"

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"I've been trying to figure out how to say this since Saturday."

"Then just say it."

"I signed something in March."

I waited.

"Dustin brought it to the house on a Sunday," he said. "He said it was for the taxes on Dad's estate. A power of attorney, to let one person handle the paperwork so we wouldn't both have to sign everything."

"One person."

"Victoria."

The waitress came by and poured me coffee I didn't want.

Ross waited until she left.

"She was good with it," he said. "She'd been doing Dustin's bookkeeping since she dropped out of school. We all thought it was a favor, so we signed it, Dustin and me. I didn't read it."

"What does it let her do?"
