Chapter 11: Terms

I walked out of the dining room and nobody stopped me.

The front hall was cold and white, with a wide curved staircase.

I went through the door and down the steps to the gravel drive, where a black car sat idling with its lights off.

I got into the passenger seat before I knew I had decided to.

A moment later the driver's door opened, and Ezra got in.

He shut it.

For a minute neither of us said anything.

I watched the front of the house, where every window was lit.

"Say it," I said.

"I knew."

"At the bar."

"At the bar."

I had been hoping, I realized, that he would lie.

It would have been easier.

"I read the file on the plane," he said. "I had your photograph. You were standing next to your father at a funeral, and you did not cry. I remembered that."

"Then why didn't you say?"

"Because you sat down and asked me for one night with no names." He kept his eyes on the windshield. "Nobody has asked me for anything without a name in eleven years."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only honest one I have."

I turned in the seat to face him.

"You let me think I was getting away," I said.

My voice shook, and I hated it.

"I spent two months looking for the way out of this. I finally found one. I was proud of myself. And you were sitting there, knowing, letting me think I had picked a stranger."

"You did pick a stranger."

"I picked my husband."

The word hung in the dark between us.

Ezra turned his head.
