Chapter 18: Every Day of It

I put on his shirt from the floor and walked into the next room.

Ezra stood at the window with the phone at his ear and his back to me.

"Hang up," I said.

He turned.

He said into the phone, "I'll call you back," and set it on the table.

"Sadie."

"Say it again. The part about a year."

He did not pretend not to know what I meant.

"I told my lawyer to draft your exit," he said. "A year from the wedding, as you asked. The house, the money, the company shares if you want them. Everything in your name, so that when you leave, nobody can say you left with nothing."

"I haven't left."

"You will."

"You decided that before the first week was out."

"You decided it," he said. "In my car. I wrote it down because you said it."

I stared at him.

It was almost funny, how reasonable he sounded.

I had just spent an hour under him, on top of him, screaming his name into his throat, and he had gotten up in the dark to arrange my departure.

"Did you hear what you said?" I asked. "The only person who ever wanted out of you."

"Yes."

"What did you mean by that?"

He looked at the floor.

"Everyone I've known wants something from the chair," he said. "My brother. His son. Your father. The board. A woman at a bar who sits down and asks for one night with no name is the only one who ever asked for nothing I own. I thought, that is a person who will go."
