Chapter 18: The Bustle

Shayla's gown hung on the front rack on Thursday morning, finished.

I'd let the waist out the last inch on Tuesday night.

"You're not seriously going," Bonnie said.

She was sitting on the cutting table eating a bagel, which my mother would have killed her for.

"I'm seriously going."

"Edie. She's going to walk down an aisle with no groom and blame you for it in front of two hundred and forty people."

"Yes."

"And you want to be standing there holding her train."

I took the gown off the rack and turned it in the light.

"Everybody in Tacoma Brides thinks I'm the woman who wrecks wedding dresses," I said. "Shayla told them so. Saturday, the whole town is going to see me put the most expensive dress in Tacoma on the meanest bride in Tacoma, perfectly, and walk away."

Bonnie chewed.

"And then what?"

"And then she does whatever she does. In front of everyone." I hung the gown back up. "Without one single thing to blame on me."

Bonnie looked at me for a long time.

"Your mom would have hated this plan," she said.

"My mom sewed a bride into her dress at a funeral home once, because the church flooded."

"Okay. Your mom would have loved this plan."

The bell over the door rang at ten.

Mrs. Meade came in out of the rain, shaking her plaid umbrella.

She went straight to the cutting table and opened her handbag.

"The bustle on the day," she said. "What do you charge?"

"Two hundred and fifty. You paid it in August."

"I paid a deposit in August. I know how this shop works." She counted three hundred-dollar bills onto the table and squared the edges. "Keep the change. Buy that girl a cutting board."

Bonnie stopped chewing.

"Mrs. Meade," I said. "You don't have to pay for anything else for her."
