Chapter 10: Alexander's POV

Alexander's POV

She looked up at me with her phone lit in her hand, and she didn't try to hide it.

"Shut the door," Tilda said.

I shut it.

I had come to the file room for one reason. The records vendor's quarterly invoice had landed on my desk that afternoon, and one line on it made no sense.

A lease pull in February. Requested by G. Lund.

In August I had asked Braden, to his face, who owned this building.

He'd told me it was a trust in Delaware. He told me to stop writing to the management company, because he would handle it.

I had thanked him.

"What are you holding?" I said.

She hesitated for a moment. Then she held out a photograph on her phone, and I read it.

T. Harlan is the owner's daughter.

I read the whole note once, slowly, and a cold, clean anger came up through me that I had not felt in years.

"Your name is in the lease," I said.

"My father put it there."

"Your father owned this building."

"Yes."

"And you've been sitting at my front desk for three years."

"I didn't know until Saturday," Tilda said. "I lied to you in that office. I'm sorry."

I gave a short, quiet laugh.

"You were burying your father. You can lie to me whenever you like."

I leaned against the shelves, because my knees wanted me to.

For two months I had been writing letters to the owner of this place. Meanwhile she had handed me my mail every morning and wished me a good day.
